The Nuclear Science Division and the Institute for Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position with the Weak Interactions Group. The group is presently involved in neutrino physics with the KamLAND anti-neutrino detector in operation at the Kamioka Mine in Japan and the CUORE neutrino-less double beta-decay experiment to be constructed at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy. Berkeley is the lead US laboratory for both these experiments. The research activities of the Berkeley group emphasize the exploration of current questions in neutrino mass and flavor mixing and the process of developing new experimental ideas is ongoing.
Duties
This group leads data analysis for the KamLAND reactor experiment. The solar neutrino phase of the KamLAND detector is schedule to begin in 2007. The successful candidate will be invited to participate in the Cuore prototype experiment, Cuoricino, operating at the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy. Cuoricino is currently the most sensitive double-beta decay experiment in operations. A future double beta-decay experiment, Cuore, is now being developed in collaboration with other institutions in the United States and Italy and is expected to begin data taking in 2011. This bolometric detector will be capable of discovering neutrino double beta-decay and establishing that neutrinos are Majorana particles if the effective neutrino mass is greater than 100 meV. This group is affiliated with both LBNL and the University of California at Berkeley, providing a rich environment for research in fundamental symmetries and neutrino physics.
Qualifications
Essential - PhD in high energy of nuclear physics is required. Demonstrated expertise in data analysis. Knowledge of computer programming and facility with C/C++ as well as standard analysis packages like PAW and ROOT. Experience with experimental equipment used in high energy physics experiments. Marginal - Specific experience with neutrino physics and neutrino detectors. Experience with non accelerator and underground experiments.
