The position of Research Specialist - Image Processing in our laboratory located in Maplewood, MN will design, develop, and implement image processing algorithms for various 3M products and processes. Initial research programs will be focused in biomedical and microbiology imaging techniques and product applications.
This individual will contribute to the development of models of physical processes, instrument characteristics, and algorithmic software that implements published solutions and novel methods of image processing and statistical analysis, and involve analyzing large amounts of data that might require specialized hardware such as compute clusters or graphic processing units (GPUs). A strong understanding of image and signal processing is required. Algorithms for filtering, pattern classification, feature extraction, quantification, deconvolution, noise reduction, registration, background estimation and optical system corrections will also be required.
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
* Providing technical leadership in applied measurement data analysis and modeling for a large corporate research laboratory * Developing image processing algorithms for novel software and integrated system products * Contributing to successful technology transfer for product commercialization through innovative research, project applications, consulting, and support * Maintaining awareness of and analyzing academic and intellectual property literature related to image processing algorithms * Partnering with a diverse array of businesses to understand their data analysis needs and goals * Actively leading and participating on project teams to develop, implement, and transfer algorithms * Utilizing good communication skills to inspire, influence, motivate, and teach other team members Travel : Up to 10% travel is required

* Master's degree in engineering, computer science, physics, or mathematics Preferred Qualifications :
* PhD in engineering, computer science, physics, or mathematics * Experience working with image processing, including image segmentation and filtering methods, noise reduction techniques, edge-detection methods, morphology tools, normalization methods, and other mathematical transforms * Ability to develop algorithms in Matlab, Visual Studio, and C/C * Knowledge of pattern recognition, computer vision, machine learning * Background in and application of image processing methods in biological and microbiology applications is a plus * Proficiency with mathematical modeling tools * Experienced exploratory data analyst with a strong background in applied mathematics including optimization and statistical learning techniques * Expertise in statistical pattern classification and data mining
