Research Scientist - Seed Production
Title: Research Scientist - Seed Production

This is a unique opportunity to lead all aspects of production research to advance corn and soybean production practices by improving seed quality, reducing costs, and maximizing land productivity. You will have the opportunity to work with a high level of flexibility and autonomy, and are encouraged to leverage novel research approaches and strategic thinking to accomplish critical research objectives. Specific role activities include experimental design, protocol development, planting, data collection, harvesting, statistical data analysis, and results presentation to leadership. You will have direct responsibility for managing specifically assigned projects within the Seed Technology team including both Production Research and Parent Test groups. Experiments/Field tests will be performed at multiple Iowa locations. You will also be responsible for basic maintenance and reliability of research and farm equipment as required ensuring quality results.
You will have an opportunity to lead a team of employees consisting of full time, part time and/or contract positions in accomplishing research objectives. Recruiting, training, developing, and mentoring interns will also be involved with this job. This position will work closely with a larger group of Scientists in Production Research and Seed Technology to produce high quality results that are directly applicable for the improvement of corn production. You will also partner with production plant personnel to identify and execute projects to improve operations.
Other roles and responsibilities of this position include championing safety, participation on networks, adherence to company ISO standards and participation in site managers meetings.
A background in Six Sigma and Lean is preferred. The successful candidate that does not have the Six Sigma training will be expected to become trained and execute trials/experiments in
support of COGS reduction, seed quality, and/or reliability.
US travel is required and a company vehicle will be supplied. Travel will vary with seasonal business and could average 20%.
Required Qualifications:
· PhD in a plant sciences related discipline or an MS degree in same disciplines and a minimum of 2 years applicable experience
· Experience planning and executing field experimental design and data analysis
· Ability to work in variable and sometimes unfavorable outdoor conditions (i.e. heat, dusty, dry, pollens, humidity, etc)
· 5 years farm operations experience (i.e. equipment maintenance, land management, crop protection, facilities management)
· Competencies such as results orientation, customer focus, self motivation, creativity, and team orientation
· Ability to lift 60 lbs
· Ability to travel up to 20%

Desired Qualifications:
· Experience in seed physiology, seed technology or other relevant seed science research
· Six Sigma/Lean exposure or certification
· Applied statistics experience
· Small plot research techniques
