Publishing Support Specialist, Spanish (WP)
Job Type: Full-Time Location: Rockville, MD Job Description: Function of the Position: This is a non-supervisory position responsible for providing assistance by ensuring that historical and file-related data necessary to produce articles for Spanish Standards publications are correct. This position provides quality assurance and composition support and performs various editorial and proofreading functions for USP publications. Converts data to various formats and validates data files. Provides support to the department through research of publications and collaboration with other members of the department. Helps oversee the daily productivity and progress of publications as needed. Roles and Responsibilities: Conducts in-depth basic, comparison, and content proofreading between final English files and Spanish files; Copyedits for content, style, grammar, syntax and spelling for all Spanish files; Researches errors found in proofing of print and online publications in both English and Spanish; Works with USP staff to answer questions and solve problems using technical and process knowledge; Converts documents into various formats, such as bilingual TTX files to XML and XML to PDF, as necessary for editing and publishing; Creates and reviews tagging in XML files for publications; Proofreads print and online publications to ensure corrections have been made and no errors have been introduced; Makes corrections to XML files based on standard proofreading markup; Proofreads index for publications and helps maintain index; Understands and follows USP style guide for both English and Spanish; Works under minimum supervision; Performs other related duties as required. Frequent Contacts: USP Staff Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in English, Spanish, Journalism, or a related degree or at least three years of experience in a proofreading and/or editing in both English and Spanish environments. High proficiency in Spanish - reading, writing and speaking. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Training and Experience: Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, database and document management system software, in a Windows environment. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication in both English and Spanish. Excellent investigative skills, ability to utilize and apply several different resources at the same time. Must work independently, be a team player and work well in a tight, deadline-driven environment. Must possess effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Must possess an eye for detail, know how to mark-up a document quickly and thoroughly for punctuation, grammar and style errors, and be proficient using standard proofreader's notations. Ability to work with multiple projects at the same time, take direction and produce defined results. Experience in a science-based environment a plus.
