We currently have an opening for a post doctoral biochemist to participate in the discovery of product quality-related traits such as taste, flavour, health, etc in major vegetable crops, such as tomato, pepper and melon. This position will be located within the Vegetable Analytics and Biochemistry Discovery (VABD) research team at the Monsanto Vegetable Seeds R/D site in Woodland, CA, USA.
Discovery scientists are key members of teams that support our vegetable product pipeline by characterizing new traits and the tools to transfer them into elite germplasm. Team members, including pathologists, cell and molecular biologists, biochemists, physiologists, geneticists, plant breeders and marketing specialists, work together to identify and develop new vegetable products that bring value to growers, processors, retailers and consumers. A VABD post doctoral discovery scientist will participate specifically in research projects and strategic initiatives aimed at delivering new sources of biochemical and physiological characteristics related to fruit and vegetable quality. This position requires a creative scientist able to work with minimal supervision working on interdisciplinary teams requiring strong attention to detail and ability to track and manage complex projects under the direction of the biochemistry lead.
Responsibilities: · Develop or make available biochemistry tools to explore germplasm collections for · new product quality traits and novel natural genetic variation of existing traits · Contribute biochemical, physiological, or metabolite data to enable study of the underlying genetics · Support Monsanto's freedom-to-operate by filing invention disclosures and assisting · with patent applications. Required: · Academic degree in biology/life sciences, PhD in metabolomics/biochemistry/plant genetics or · related disciplines with 5 years of relevant laboratory experience · Outstanding analytical skills · Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills · Proven ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams · Solid understanding of plant biochemistry and systems biology, with understanding their relationship to genetics and markers a plus · Skill in management of experimental data and statistical analysis · Experience in biochemical analysis (HPLC, GC-MS, Enzyme Assays) & Molecular Biology · Comfort with field, greenhouse and laboratory work · Understanding of basic agronomic practices in vegetable crops a plusHands-on experiences in enzymology including kinetic characterization, protein purification, assay development for proteins and small molecules is strongly desired
