The Materials Scientist located in Austin , TX will work in the field of wireless communication, with primary focus on passive infrastructure. Applications will include indoor DAS (distributed antenna systems), outdoor DAS, macro cellular infrastructure, and others.
The job entails selecting materials, developing processes, characterizing materials, and other scientific work in pursuit of the development of products that work at microwave frequencies. In some product constructs, the microwave energy interacts with the material set, requiring knowledge of complex permittivity in relationship to materials and processes used to make product. In other products, materials work will be based on physical properties and cost / performance choices for molded or extruded materials. The job entails working with other professionals in pursuit of optimizing product performance and cost through material engineering and processing. The Materials Scientist will multi-task across product teams, requiring good time management and a broad materials understanding.
The candidate should have a working knowledge of polarization of materials, complex permittivity at microwave frequencies, polymer resin compound selection for molding processes, and familiarity with extrusion processes. The job qualifications include also process development techniques and statistical analysis. Further, the candidate should be skilled at hands-on empirical work, as well as, analysis and development of models to support and guide empirical work.
Further, the job entails working closely and effectively with other engineering professionals ranging from mechanical engineers, physicists, and electrical engineers. A key job requirement is working effectively with cross functional peers in manufacturing, marketing, accounting and other functions to achieve commercial success .
As a senior staff member, the candidate is expected to consistently identify, initiate, plan and complete major technical programs, leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing and emerging technologies, with significant impact on the business. The candidate should proactively identify, recommend, and lead the development of solutions for product needs.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science * Minimum of 7 years applied materials science work in new product development * Minimum of 5 years of experience in materials and process work involving the interaction of materials with electromagnetic energy, to include one or more of the following: dielectric material development, dielectric characterization, high frequency materials development for signal integrity work and/or microwave materials development Preferred Qualifications: * Advanced degreein Materials Science * Proven track record of individual technical contribution * Direct experience with polymer extrusion processing (e.g. cabling, heat shrink, weather stripping, etc.) * Process development skills and experience for cabling processes are a plus * Proven skills in developing and testing dielectric materials at microwave frequencies (300 Mhz to 2 Ghz) * Knowledge of broadband networks and their material needs would be a real benefit and enable rapid contribution * Demonstrated business acumen and customer service skills * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Team player with the ability to contribute in a matrix organization
