Title: Genebank Research Associate (Vegetables division) Location: East Africa-Bergschenhoek We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join Monsanto Vegetable's Genebank Operations as a Research Associate. As a Genebank Research Associate you will help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Monsanto Vegetable Seeds Division genbank for Brassica and Leafy Vegetable crops. You will be part of the team that ensures that useful genetic diversity is made known and available to breeders and scientists. You will be doing it by catalyzing the development of strategies for screening, characterization and evaluation of genebank accessions for traits of importance, and developing systems for enhancing access to information and materials by breeders and scientists.
Responsibilities: * Review in-house and public seed inventories * Acquire new accessions from external (public) genebanks, in communication with the curator * Conduct database and hard-copy documentation management * Participate in regeneration/multiplication in greenhouse and open-field conditions, necessary seed treatments * Perform phenotypic characterization and evaluation * Monitor the need for regeneration of accessions (amount of conserved seed, quality/viability of seed, etc.) * Manage preparation and shipping of samples for fingerprinting laboratory analyses * Obtain required phytosanitary certificates and distribute seeds to breeders and scientists within Monsanto Vegetable Seeds Division Required Skills/Experience: * BS in Agriculture, Plant Biology or related field of study * 4 years of relevant research experience * Excellent knowledge of MS Excel and Word * Excellent spoken and written English * Outstanding documentation management skills * Great communication skills, team-oriented personality * Flexible for national and international travel Desired Skills/Experience: * MS in Agriculture, Plant Biology or related field of study * Experience in working with vegetable crops * Knowledge of general plant genetic resources management * Knowledge of seedborne disease prevention and treatment * Basic knowledge of methods for protecting intellectual property associated with plant germplasm * Experience in molecular marker technologies * Basic knowledge in phytopathology (ability to conduct bio-assays) * Existing expertise in wide crosses between cultivated crops and related species
