Director, Advanced Plant Breeding Services Program

Job Number:24845484
Company Name:Heartland Plant Innovations, Inc. (HPI)
Job Location:Manhattan, KS US
Job Category:Science & Biotech
Minimum Education:Post Graduate Degree

Director, Advanced Plant Breeding Services Program
Job Description:
High-Impact Research Leadership Opportunity in Innovative Plant Biotech Company

Our client – Heartland Plant Innovations, Inc. (HPI) – is a development-stage plant sciences company that is conducting leading-edge research on wheat, sorghum, and native plants to target specific market needs in the areas of human health and nutrition, animal nutrition and health, and biofuels/biomaterials. With a goal of becoming the premier wheat and sorghum research entity in the nation, HPI is establishing a research facility to advance the application of accelerated plant breeding techniques in wheat improvement. Kincannon & Reed has been engaged to recruit a talented, results-driven plant scientist to serve as HPI’s Director, Advanced Plant
Breeding Services Program.

The Company
HPI is dedicated to developing and commercializing new genetic traits and other valuable technologies for wheat, sorghum and native plants with a goal to help farmers be more efficient and more profitable and help customers of these grains and plants to do the same. The end-result will be development of a host of new traits that can improve agronomic performance for wheat and sorghum, improve human nutrition and animal feed efficiency, and create new uses for both crops.

Organized as a for-profit C-corporation, HPI has a unique shareholder group comprised of innovative agricultural producers, and leading global seed, food, and food ingredient companies and partners with leading Kansas public universities. HPI was incorporated by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, which owns 51% of HPI. The remaining 49% of HPI is owned by Monsanto, Pioneer, Kellogg, General Mills and other companies and individuals. In addition to these equity investments, HPI is supported through a Center for Innovation grant from the Kansas Bioscience Authority. This state entity is providing $4 million in non-dilutive startup funds for HPI's
first year and has earmarked an additional $4 million per year for the next four years.

Headquartered on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, HPI is in a unique position to help facilitate public and private partnerships and develop and commercialize new traits. The Company already has promising sponsored research projects underway at KSU and University of Kansas.

A critical early business initiative of HPI is its Advanced Plant Breeding Services Program (APBSP). The first of APBSP’s services will be the establishment and operation of the Doubled Haploid (DH) Laboratory in a fee-for-service business model. Already under development, this lab will provide DH production services to public and private wheat breeding programs throughout the U.S. Fueled by the dramatic upswing in private sector wheat research in the last two years, significant demand for HPI’s DH services has been identified among target customers because DH technologies can halve the development timelines for new wheat cultivars. The Company seeks to recruit an experienced plant scientist to the role of Director, Advanced Plant Breeding Services Program
to develop and implement a plan for the initiation and growth of HPI’s DH business.

The Position
The Director, APBSP will lead, plan, and implement the development and scale-up of a wheat DH research service to a fully commercial system and subsequently manage the DH services program for HPI. Reporting initially to HPI’s CEO, the Director, APBSP will:
  • Initiate a research program for rapid breeding of improved wheat germplasm and varieties using innovative cellular, molecular technologies and plant production systems (initially focusing on the wheat-maize system for DH production).
  • Acquire necessary equipment, establish efficient plant culture facilities and protocols for production and doubling of haploids, and develop streamlined systems for data management.
  • Recruit, guide, coach, and develop the research and technical team for the Company’s DH services.
  • Partner with HPI’s business development on efforts to communicate/promote the activities of the DH facility with external scientists, potential/current customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct and manage a continuous improvement process with a focus on more efficient systems of DH production, fast generation cycling, and population improvement, including integration of DNA marker technologies with DH breeding.
  • Participate in HPI’s leadership team and report to HPI’s board of directors, as needed, on progress towards critical milestones. Represent HPI at scientific conferences and symposia.
Other important parameters for this position:
  • The Director, APBSP will have opportunity to become an adjunct faculty member at Kansas State University.
  • The position is located in Manhattan, Kansas, cited in 2010 by Forbes Magazine as one of the top three small communities in the U.S. for business and careers. This thriving locale has excellent school systems, easy commutes, affordable living, and numerous recreational, cultural, and entertainment opportunities.
  • The successful candidate will be rewarded with an attractive compensation package, which includes a competitive base salary, an annual performance-based cash bonus, company stock, and broad benefits.
Candidate Profile
For this high-visibility role in the wheat research community, HPI seeks a talented research leader with excellent strategic vision and team-building skills. This technically strong “roll-up-your-sleeves” problem-solver will manage the DH process research and related scale-up technology development, managing the DH services once fully commercial. The ideal candidate will have . . .
  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in genetics, plant breeding, cell and developmental biology, plant pathology or a related plant sciences field with research experience in plant tissue culture and molecular biology and a minimum of 5 years experience in the seed or plant biotechnology industry or relevant academic program.
  • Strong technical expertise which is recognized by external scientists. Experience in bioinformatics and wheat genetics, especially DH technology, is a plus. A working knowledge of current/evolving technologies related to improvement of plants. Experience in high throughput plant research operations is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to take research projects from conception to completion in a timeline-driven environment. A track record of managing successful external research relationships/alliances is desirable.
  • Strategic orientation with the ability to apply a solid grasp of business management and leadership principles, combined with a detail orientation to effectively manage day-to-day operations.
  • Successful record of leading and developing staff. Ability to work in a diverse, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong written/oral communication and interpersonal skills. Unquestioned integrity. Sound judgment, high physical/intellectual energy, and robust entrepreneurial spirit. A love of challenges and sense of urgency.
