TheApplication Engineerlocated inAustin, TXwill work in the field of wireless communication, with primary focus on passive infrastructure. Applications will include indoor DAS (distributed antenna systems), outdoor DAS, macro cellular infrastructure, and others. The job will require a familiarity with networking applications and wireless networking in particular.
The Application Engineer will play a key role on cross functional commercialization teams consisting of technical, manufacturing, marketing, finance and other functions, as products are developed using a stage-gate process. The Application Engineer will also work closely with business development managers to achieve commercial targets.
The Application Engineer is a technical interface from 3M to the customer in cooperation with business development and the technical team. The Application Engineer will be highly customer focused to insure that customer needs, both articulated and unarticulated, are accurately understood and translated into the engineering language of a target specification. Application understanding must be assimilated in such a manner to enable the successful commercialization of a product which satisfies customer needs.
Effective job execution requires the candidate to have a solid technical background combined with good business acumen. Effective communication skills are essential, including an ability to effectively communicate with various engineering professionals, as well as, presenting complex concepts to non-engineering professionals in a comprehensible manner.
Good skills at customer facing activities and relationship building are required, including good listening skills. Further, the effective partnership with external customers must be complemented with strong internal working relationships. The Application Engineer must work closely and effectively with engineering professionals ranging from mechanical engineers, material scientists, physicists, and electrical engineers, and other disciplines. Another key job requirement is working effectively with cross functional peers in manufacturing, marketing, accounting and other functions to achieve commercial success.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics * Minimum of 7 years of combined experience in one or more of the following fields: telecommunications, networking applications, passive interconnect technology, or electronics * Minimum of 5 years of experience in the application engineering for new product development in broadband networks or in network design Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated wireless knowledge through the IEEE based WCET (Wireless Communication Engineering Technology) certification, demonstrating knowledge of systems, industry and basics, as defined by IEEE Communication Society * Preferred experience set includes: (a) A history significant technical contributions in a relevant field; (b) direct experience in the wireless industry, in the application engineering or network design role; (c) Direct experience in the system specification of wireless networks, with emphasis on passive DAS systems * Demonstrated business acumen and customer service skills * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Team player with the ability to contribute in a matrix organization * Ability to travel 25 % (international and domestic)
